JVS works in communities around the Chikuwadi, Mandala in the Mankhurd, Govandi, Chembur, Ghatkopar, Vikroli and Mulund Dumping ground in Mumbai.

Mankhurd is the slum area. As per the government policy it was dark listed as it has lack of basic amenities. Government was found to be least interested in helping the people and in solving their problems. So neither politicians nor government body provided any kind of help to them.

Some of the youth students and the community members who were enthusiastic to do some work for achieving their basic amenities but they won’t get any kind of support from the society and the family as well. After understanding these kind of problems JVS decided to help them and do a good quality work for them to fulfill their basic need.

The trust placed in them as the local people inspired them to think about having their own organization to work in the community. This idea got the shape in September, 1997 when the group got formally registered as ‘Janjagruti Vidyarthi Sangh’ (JVS) under Society Registration Act 1860 and Trust Act 1950.

Since then JVS is working effectively in the domains of Education, Health, Training, Community organization, Vocational training as well as Advocacy in Mumbai. Besides this, JVS also works on Right to education, Housing policy, Child Rights, 74th Amendments, Civic Issues, Right to Information, Right to Rag Pickers, and Right to Self Help Groups.
